Slack

Camulodunum

SE0817

Flavian fort, 1.5 ha, abandoned circa 125 AD; square in plan, it measured 256 feet along each side inside the ramparts.  Two outer ditches were separated from the rampart by a berm 5 feet wide.  The outer ditch was not complete.  The original timber construction was partially replaced by stone prior to its abandonment. Excavated in 1970.

Garrisoned by Cohors IV Breucorum (early 2nd?)
Archaeology indicates the presence of a vicus or civilian settlement on the north side (1969).

Maybe in association with the fort at Slack, or as its predecessor, records from the Victoria County History indicate, that at Bark-island, called in antiquity The Meg Dyke, some 2 miles west of Slack was another earthwork of possible Roman origin.  According the VCH (1912) "The recent opening of a quarry within the work has resulted in the destruction of most of the ramparts.... The ramparts were double, 22ft from crest to crest and 6 - 7 feet above the bottom of the ditch... The probable area enclosed (sic) was about 1 1/3 acres."
