Re-considered dating evidence now points to a date for the painting between 1830 and 1840, tending towards the latter.  A name for the artist has been offered, William Frederick Settle (1821 – 1897).  Settle was a local Hull artist, who at the age of 20 years became a student of John Ward, who was the foremost marine artist of the area.

If point of fact, it has been muted that this is not a painting at all, but a chromolithographic print.  This needs to be mentioned in order to refute the point.  It shows no signs of being printed, nor do the colours appear artificial, indeed, some of the finer details are SO fine, that nothing other than photographic printing could reproduce this particular image, and as its provenance is known for at least 100 years, then the latter is not an option.

Enough to say however that its appearance herein has caused no little fuss in some circles of local history, and that alone indicates, to me anyway, that the image has been hitherto unknown.  As the image, original painted water colour OR print is in the family, and as it shows exceptionally well, the prospect of the Citadel from the Humber, I have no qualms about including it here as one of the major features of this article.

Thanks Mum!!
